Aperture Arts Awards 2017

Welcome to the most appropriate list of some of the best things we saw in the year. In 2017, we saw great seasons, comebacks, sequels, revivals and miniseries. I was most pleased with the return of two of my favourite series and this time they both didn’t just give a glimpse into their old awesomeness but also ascended to never before attained heights. Yes, Samurai Jack which returned after 13 years to conclude its as-old-as time tale and incidentally gave us one of the greatest final seasons for any epic action series ever. Even Twin Peaks returned precisely when it was supposed to but it took a staggering 26 years to come back and haunt as well as delight us with a similar yet arguably much better season which quite possibly be the last.

See the complete list as follows:- (and yeah this is only all the stuff which I watched so it’s a possibility I might've missed something or forgot about it. Kindly mention it in the comments)

Best Movie- Blade Runner 2049 (awe inspiring and thought provoking, this sequel to one of the greatest sci-fi classics totally live up to its hype) (read full review here)
Second Favourite- The Big Sick (this endearing almost true story is unusually comical yet quite sentimental)
Although not the winner, I had the most fun while watching 'It'

Other Contenders-

Dunkirk
Baby Driver
John Wick 2
IT
Kingsman The Golden Circle

Best Superhero movie- Logan (because bye bye wolverine) (read full review here)

Other Contenders-
I guess i'm too old to enjoy this now

    Thor Ragnarok
    Spiderman: Homecoming
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
    The Lego Batman Movie
    Wonder Woman
    Justice League
    Power Rangers

Worst Movie- The Fate of the Furious (everything from start to finish was just as profound as a slice of cheese)

Major Kusanagi deserved better
Other Contenders-

Alien Covenant
Baywatch
Kong Skull Island
Justice League
Transformers: The Last Knight
Ghost in the Shell

Biggest Disappointment- Iron Fist (Comic iron fist is my favourite and after the amazing daredevil nobody expected Netflix to churn out such a vacuous show which led to one of the worst superhero assemblies ever)
How is it even possible to suck so much?

Other Contenders-

The Defenders
Star Wars: The Last Jedi here
Justice League
Alien Covenant
The Dark Tower
T2 Trainspotting
Ghost in the Shell

Best Hindi Language Film- Newton (riddled with subtle discomforting yet routine actions of regular people, one man strives to be different. Against all odds he does his job and makes for quite an interesting yet grounded adventure)

Other Contenders-

Still better than Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara trio

      Hindi Medium

Bareilly Ki Barfi

Secret Superstar

Jolly LLB 2

Lipstick Under My Burkha

Trapped

Worst Hindi Language Film- Too many to report

Best South Movie- Duvvada Jagannadham aka DJ (Telugu) and Bairavaa (Tamil) *

*note:- I only saw these two south indian movies this year

Best Animated Movie- Coco (young dreams and lively dead characters fuel the magic of this animated wonder, making it undoubtedly the year’s best)

Other Contenders-
Some moments were truly teary

Cars 3
Ferdinand
Lego Batman Movie
Despicable me 3
Justice League Dark

Best Anime- Boku no Hero Academia (Season 2) (some stuff was fun)

Other Contender(s)- Attack on Titan (Season 2) *

(note:- this year not many good anime were released and these two slightly above average anime had no competition)

Worst protagonist with worst best friend

Best new TV Series- Taboo (tales of deceit and unbridled barbarity bordering on the supernatural makes for an enjoyable and bold new series)

Other contenders-

The punisher
The handmaid’s tale
Legion
13 Reasons Why
Dark
Mindhunter
The Tick
No X-men media ever can even touch the awesomeness of this marvel

Best limited series or miniseries- Twin Peaks (mysterious, eccentric, and labyrinthine in nature; this revival was highly unlikely but inevitable in hindsight garnering acclaim in a time where the audience can’t nearly begin to comprehend this unique masterpiece)
Being a parent is serious business when you're rich and competitive

Other contenders-

Samurai Jack
Big Little Lies
Sherlock
Sarabhai vs Sarabhai

Best New Season- All Winners

All Contenders-

Game of Thrones Season 7
Better Call Saul Season 3
Mr Robot Season 3
Stranger Things Season 2

GoT was at its best like every year; Better Call Saul succeeded in upping the ante once again; Mr. Robot somehow created greatest dystopian superhero sci-fi thriller ever; Stranger Things stretched out and came back to tame the paranormal with style and sentiment once again.

Very good but not exceptional new season-

House Of Cards Season 5
Black Mirror Season 4
Fargo Season 3
Peaky Blinders Season 4
Narcos Season 3

Fargo Season 3 was totally cool but just not as fabulous as the previous seasons

Best Animated Series- Samurai Jack (This year, Genndy Tartakovsky treated us with a darker, edgier side of our favourite samurai whose incomplete tale finally gets an apt but poignant ending)

Second Place-

·        Rick and Morty, Bojack Horseman

Jack is back and he is not happy
Boom! I'm a Pickle Morty! Pickle Rickkk!!                     Bojack Horseman season 4 was just something 'special'

Absurdly popular but stupid series- 13 Reasons Why (too unrealistic with every character excessively good looking. Mawkish, annoying and privileged psychopathic teenagers who are dumber than an ostrich)
This shit good? fo real?

Other Contenders-

·        Riverdale

·        American Gods

Worst TV series- The Defenders (Mostly because it tricked you into believing it will be something of epic proportions when it was one of the poorest Netflix productions)

Other contenders-

Assemble all the reasons why DC shows suck and put them into one big garbage pile
Iron Fist
The Flash
Suits
Supergirl
Arrow
Legends of Tomorrow
